A manifold is a pipe with several openings, in this case connected to cylinders  FOR THE SUPPLY OF GASES .
Uses
Manifolds are used to supply piped nitrous oxide and Entonox,
ALSO they may  be used as a
primary oxygen supply in small hospitals, or as a backup supply for BIG  hospitals.

How it works

The manifold consists of  two groups (occasionally there may be more) of  high capacity
cylinders (size J or L or H in India ). all the cylinders are  connected to the manifold  and then to the pipeline.
Pressure of cylinders are reduces by pressure regulators before the  pipeline. all the cylinder of a group is  used together until a certain point , after that point an automatic valve
switches to draw gas from the other group of cylinders.  an alarm also starts to alert the staff that cylinder needs to be changed as they are empty  .

Usually a group of cylinder is designed to full fill the demand of one day , hence one group of cylinder is changed every day .

Advantages

 Simple and cheap.
 Provides an effective backup supply.
alarm system to prevent shortage of supply .

Disadvantages

less capacity when compared with a VIE.

Safety
Medical gases are inflammable  and has  risk of explosion so the manifold is kept well ventilated
building and is  separated  from the main hospital.
The main cylinder store should be in a separate room.
