Instruments used in Orthopedic Surgery

  IN THIS ARTICLE I AM GOING TO SHARE MOST COMMONLY USED ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY INSTRUMENTS .

Instrument used in orthopedic surgery

APART from Electrosurgery Unit , C arm , Tourniquet , Suction machine  these are the instruments used in ortho surgery .

Orthopedic Instruments 

1. Bone Drill :

There are two types of Drill . It can be pneumatic or electrical drill .

Bone drill has two main components drill handle and pneumatic tube . There are various types of attachments /connectors used for doing  different type of work like making a hole in bone , screwing or unscrewing a bolt etc.

There are two buttons in  the handle of the drill  one rotates the drill in clockwise and another anticlockwise direction.

This drill is sterilized by autoclave .

This drill uses air pressure to work .

2 .  B.P. Handle : Bard Parker Handle or scalpel

( named after Charles Russell Bard and Morgan Parker, founders of the Bard-Parker Company  )

First off all blade no 10 is used to cut the skin .( NOTE : scalpel is always passed in kidney tray )  

then 15 no. blade is used to cut deep tissue .

some times blade no 11 also known as stab knife is also used . 

these are the most commonly used blade with bp handle in ortho surgery .

3. Langenbeck also called as  Right Angled Retractor ( by surgeon ) :

this instrument is then used to retract the wall .

4. Suction : Vacuum suction is used to suck blood .

5. Czerny :

used to retract wall .  it looks like the shape of letter Z . 

6. Periosteal Elevator : 

Used to remove or Elevate periosteal layer from bone .

7. Curette : used to scrap or debride biological tissue or debris .

8. Spike or Bone Elevator : to elevate the bone .

9. Charlie Retractor : Self retaining retractor  used to retract wall

10.  Screw Driver : used to screw and remove the screw .

11. Tendon Holder or Tendon holding Forceps  : used to hold tendons

12.  Drill sleeves :  used to drill in bone .

 13. Hammer or Mallet  : used to push wire in bone .

15. Tissue Cutting Scissors and Artery Forceps : to cut the tissue and to clamp the bleeder , respectively .

18.  Artificial bones of Pelvic region : used to bend / shape the plates , wire etc.

19.  Dynamic Compression Plate : used to reduce and fix fracture site so that it can heal over time .

20. Screw  : used to secure plates in bone . they are of different types .

24. Cling : plastic film used to wrap unsterile limb of patient .

25. S-march  bandage or Tensor Bandage : used to reduce the amount of blood from limb before applying tourniquet to reduce the blood loss .

26. K WIRE :  USED TO REDUCE THE FRACTURE AND KEEP BONES IN ANATOMICAL POSITION .

THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER INSTRUMENTS USED IN ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY .  LIKE WIRE CUTTER , PLAIR OR PLAS , TOWEL CLIPS , KOCHER ETC .
