Mr. Richard Salt was the Anaesthetic Technician of Sir Robert Reynolds Macintosh . He has played very important role in the history of Anaesthesia .
  

Sir Robert Macintosh was 

the first  professor of Anaesthesia in United Kingdom and chairman of 
Nuffield Department of Anesthesia in Oxford .

Mr. Richard Salt

 of Oxford  in 1937 was titled as Anaesthetic Technician  . He has played very important role in the designing  the devices invented by Sir Macintosh  like Macintosh laryngoscope blade , EMO Vaporizer , development in modes of  ventilation etc.

Role of Anesthesia Technician in 1930's

Those days Anaesthetic Technician role was more like a biomedical technician . They use to focus on maintenance , repairing of medical equipment . But today Anesthesia Technician also called as Anesthesia Technologist ( with degree course )  plays very important role in Direct patient care . They are now responsible for the most of the things done in operation theatre . They prepare operation room for the induction of Anesthesia and surgery ( they clean , calibrate / check , prepare equipment  , Help Anesthesiologist and Surgeon in Administration of Anesthesia and In Surgical procedures , respectively . 
In 1941 Sir Robert Reynolds Macintosh invented Macintosh blade and his Macintosh laryngoscope blade was developed by Mr. Richard Salt .
Before that time laryngoscope blade used to be straight .

Story behind the invention of Macintosh blade.

One day during tonsillectomy a surgeon inserted Boyle-davis gag which was larger then required which resulted in the full view of vocal cords .
Macintosh understood that any that  they need to develop  similar instrument  for easy intubation . The same day Mr. Richard Salt modified the blade of Boyle-david gag and attached it to the laryngoscope handle .

Apart from this Mr. Richard Salt has designed early prototypes of EMO Vaporizer which was invented by Dr H. G. Epstein and Sir Robert Macintosh of the Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics at the University of Oxford, with the aid of their technician, Mr Richard Salt .
