How to Prepare Spinal Set or Trolley for Spinal Anesthesia | Anesthesia Technicians

Spinal Anesthesia is given by inserting a spinal needle at the level of L3 -L4 when patient is in sitting or lateral position . It is an Invasive procedure , hence sterile environment and technique is required while spinal anesthesia is administered .

SPINAL SET / PACK 

To create sterile field near the puncture area ( L3-L4 ) we need various sterile items 

 These items are classified into disposable and reusable items . 

1. Disposable items : items which are used only one time and are discarded after their use            for example 
1. Spinal Needle 
2. Anaesthetic drug ( in. bupivacaine HCL Heavy )
3. surgical gloves 
4. Gauze pieces and Pads 
5. 5 CC Disposable Syringe ( for Anawin Heavy i.e. Bupivacaine 0.5 % )
6. 2CC/ 5CC for Local anaesthetic ( to reduce the pain on insertion site )

These items are already Sterilized by their manufacturers  so we just need them to open with aseptic technique during the trolley preparation .

1. Reusable Items : Items which are reused after proper cleaning and sterilization                            for example 

SPONGE HOLDER 

1. Sponge Holder 
2. Kidney tray or Bowl
3. Rectangular metallic tray 
4. cut sheet
5. gown 
6. Two  Linen Sheets ( if steriled by autoclave technique  and tyvek sheets if steriled by Gas Plasma sterilization Technique )
1.  to create a sterile field on the myo stand / trolley .
2. to wrap  all the reusable items as a packet or covering that maintains the sterility of reusable items . 

These items are  sterilized by Hospital's CSSD . In some hospitals Gauze piece and Gauze Pads are added in this set during packaging of the Spinal Set . 

So now Lets learn how to make ideal spinal set or spinal pack as an anesthesia tech .

1. take a square shape sheet keep it on table 
2. take one more sheet on it 
3. now keep the metallic tray on it
4. keep a gamgee ( a very big Gauze pad ) if available 
5. on it keep a sponge holder
6. a kidney tray or a bowl
7. keep 7 to 9 gauze piece 
8. keep 2 gauze pads 
9. a surgical gown 
10. a cut sheet 
11. Now wrap all these items which are on metallic sheet with the inner square sheet . 
12. now wrap the outermost sheet , use tape or bandage to fix/ tie it . 
13. labell the name i.e. spinal set , date on which it is packed , and name of the person who packed it .

SPINAL SET / PACK 

YOUR SPINAL PACK OR SPINAL SET IS READY FOR AUTOCLAVE . 

All the other disposable items will be opened on the trolley during preparation .
