Diameter Index Safety System ( DISS ) used in Medical Gas Supply

DISS is a safety mechanism which prevents wrong connection of medical gas pipelines whose pressure is 200 psig or less. Material used for making DISS components are Brass or nickel chrome plated with modern techniques . These material ensure good quality and long life of connectors .

In our anesthesia machine we need different  types of gases including life sustaining gas ( oxygen ) and gases with some Anesthetic  properties    ( like Nitrous Oxide with Analgesic properties ). Correct attachment of cylinders is insured by PIN INDEX Safety System and for medical gas pipelines correct attachment is insured by DISS - Diameter Index Safety System .

This system is based on Diameter . It consist of 3 components

  1. Body Adapter
  2. Nipple
  3. Nut

1. Body Adapter :

Body adapter is attached to Anesthesia machine . There are basically two Bores or we can say two Diameter which are called or recognized as
  1. Small Bore or Small diameter of Body
  2. Large Bore or Large Diameter of Body .
Diameter of these Small Bore and Large Bore are different for each gas .
To insure that every manufacturer builds the same dimensions of these component for the particular gas we have CGA No. which means Compressed Gas Association Number .

2. Nipple :

Nipple Consists of a nose , small shoulder and a large shoulder . These Shoulder mates with Bore of Body Adapter .
Small shoulder mate with small bore .
Large shoulder mate with large Bore.

3. Nut :

Nut is basically a screw that is used to tightened and secure the Nipple in Body Adapter .
It has Threads which got engage only when The correct size of body and nipple are used .

How DISS prevents wrong Gas Pipline Connection ?

As we know that we have CGA No. for each gas and with increase in CGA number Diameter of  small shoulder of nipple increases , diameter of small bore also increases  which insure proper fit and attachment .
similarly with increase in CGA number diameter of large shoulder decreases with the diameter of large bore.

If we try to insert wrong gas pipeline Then
EITHER diameter of small shoulder of nipple will be larger then the diameter of small bore , hence nipple will not mate with body  OR diameter of large shoulder will be more than the diameter of large bore and again the nipple will not mate the body

BOTH OF THESE SITUATIONS WILL NOT ALLOW THE threads of NUT TO GET ENGAGE , hence wrong connection is prevented .

CGA NO. of OXYGEN IS 1240 in which 18 threads are there .
